How to Find Manufacturers in China

A practical starting point for identifying and screening potential manufacturers.

Start with a clear brief

Write down the product function, materials, dimensions, quality expectations, packaging, estimated quantity and target delivery date. Identify what is essential and what can be negotiated.

Build and screen a shortlist

Search trade directories, exhibitions and referrals. Check the company’s legal identity and available business information; ask whether the supplier manufactures the specific product or sources it elsewhere. A trading company may still be suitable if its role is clear.

Request comparable information

Send the same brief to several candidates. Ask about capacity, samples, minimum quantities, lead times and relevant documentation. Review samples and verify claims independently where appropriate.

Decide on next steps

Compare total terms, communication and fit rather than price alone. Consider an independent factory assessment or inspection when the project warrants it. No initial screen guarantees performance.

Requirements vary by product and destination. Verify applicable import, safety, labelling and other requirements for your circumstances with qualified parties.
